Description
Detailed design of a structure which requires students, working in teams, to exercise creativity, to make design assumptions and to complete the structural design based on a synthesis of technical knowledge acquired in this and other structural engineering courses. Course lectures focus on seismic load calculation; design of concrete, reinforced masonry and timber elements; bridge design; and advanced structural steel design. Prerequisite: CIV E 474. Note: Restricted to fourth-year traditional and fifth-year co-op engineering students.Learning Outcomes
- Design a structure to meet defined specifications based on information synthesized from advanced analyses and relevant codes and standards.- Participate and contribute effectively in team activities.
- Compute seismic loads on building structures based on the National Building Code of Canada.
- Identify and describe seismic load paths and load-resisting systems in building structures.
- Analyze structural systems consisting of multiple materials under gravity and lateral loads.
- Identify the governing failure modes and design of timber members and their connections.
- Identify the governing failure modes and design of steel seismic force-resisting systems and their connections.
- Identify the governing failure modes and design of reinforced concrete foundation and shear walls.
