Description

Endowed by the members of the Civil Class of 1955, classmates, former students, colleagues, family and friends of Jack Longworth. This award was established by the Civil Engineering Class of 1955 on the occasion of their 40th year of graduation.
Jack Longworth passed away at the age of 88. He was a sympathetic and considerate person who was deeply missed by his family and community. As a professor at the University of Alberta for 38 years and a professional civil engineer, he made a long-lasting contribution and support to improve the national building code of Canada at national and provincial levels. He was the recipient of many awards and honors throughout his life and is remembered as a very excellent instructor. He not only sang in the choir of Knox-Metropolitan United Church for 60 years since his childhood but also regularly contribute to the public life of his community as a board member. Serving on the board of St. Stephen's College for 26 years, 12 of which as a chair, he received an honorary doctorate for his outstanding collaboration on the development of the college.


Criteria

To be awarded annually to an undergraduate student with superior academic achievement overall in Civil Engineering. The recipient will be the student with the highest cumulative mark(s) in the structural design course(s).
