U of A’s Petroleum Engineering Program Ranked #2 in the World, Breaking University Record

April 2025

It is with great pride that we share that our Petroleum Engineering program has been ranked 2nd globally and 1st nationally by QS Subject Rankings. The program has been steadily rising in the ranks over the past five years and has now established a new best for the U of A. The QS ranking is based on employer reputation, H-index citations, citations per paper, academic reputation, international fees, scholarship, and student mix.

The Petroleum Engineering program stands out for several reasons, but among those is their strong emphasis on cultivating industry relationships, a well-established co-op program, and an active Petroleum Industry Advisory Committee (PIAC). As well, the program boasts global research impact and internationally recognized academic excellence underpinned by a dynamic and diverse community of learners, researchers, and educators. Another notable asset is the well-funded research program led by faculty members, exploring emerging topics such as methane emissions, hydrogen storage, geothermal energy, and carbon sequestration

A special shout out goes to John F Czuroski, a dedicated lab technician, who has contributed a remarkable 42 years of service in support of this program. This achievement would not be possible without the brilliance and commitment of each member of this community.

Congrats to the Petroleum Engineering Program on receiving recognition for the exceptional work you are all doing. Of note, The U of A also ranked 16th globally in Mineral and Mining Engineering. We are fortunate as a department to have phenomenal programs across the board, and we will surely continue to see our programs earn the recognition and prestige they deserve.
