Traffic Operation and Control

Description

This course introduces the fundamental principles of traffic engineering for streets and highways, with a primary focus on the safe and efficient operation of roadway systems. Driven by the critical needs of traffic safety and congestion mitigation, the curriculum covers traffic data collection and processing methods, statistical analysis techniques, and the design of traffic control devices and strategies. Emphasis is placed on quantitative and computerized techniques for designing and optimizing both signalized/unsignalized intersection operations and freeway systems. Students will gain hands-on experience using industry-standard traffic engineering software packages, including HCS, SYNCHRO, PASSER II, PASSER III, and SIDRA, while integrating state-of-the-art computer applications and current research findings throughout the term.

Learning Outcomes

- Analyze Traffic Flow & Safety Data: Collect, process, and apply statistical analysis techniques to real-world traffic data to evaluate intersection and roadway performance.
- Design Traffic Control Systems: Develop and implement effective traffic control strategies and signal designs for complex intersection geometries.
- Optimize Roadway Efficiency: Utilize quantitative methods to minimize delay, reduce congestion, and improve vehicle movement efficiency along arterial corridors and freeways.
- Master Industry Software: Demonstrate proficiency in leading traffic simulation and capacity software packages, including HCS, SYNCHRO, PASSER, and SIDRA, to design and evaluate traffic systems.
- Apply Research & Modern Standards: Integrate contemporary research findings and state-of-the-art computer applications to solve modern engineering challenges in traffic operations.
