Introduction to Solid Mechanics

Description

This course introduces the fundamental principles of solid mechanics, including vectors, tensors, stress, strain, elasticity, plasticity, constitutive laws, hardening rules, and upscaling techniques. Students will develop both theoretical understanding and practical computational skills through problem-solving using Python and FLAC3D, with applications to elastic and plastic material behaviour.

Learning Outcomes

- Demonstrate an understanding of the basic principles behind the transformation of stress, theory of elasticity and plasticity.
- Apply the theory of elasticity and plasticity in engineering design and problem solving by coding and simulation.
- Demonstrate the ability to work and communicate effectively in a collaborative engineering project, and deliver in a final report and presentation.
