Description

Endowed by Walter's friends, industry and university colleagues in recognition of his outstanding contribution in the field of surveying education.
Walter Lionel Bigg was born in 1907. He did various jobs during his life. He was a teacher and principal at Spiritwood School in Saskatchewan for a year (1930-1931). After that, he worked as a logger, surveyor, rigger as well as mill hand for H.R. Mac Millar Lumber.co in Vancouver Island for 3 years. He served as a survey party chief on runaways No1 and No 2 at the Namao Airport in Edmonton and the Alaska Highway from 1942 to 1944. From 1944 to 1946, he attended the Royal Naval Volunteer Reserve of Canada. He graduated from the University of Alberta with a B.Sc. in Civil Engineering in 1949. During 1949 to 1951 period, he served in different positions successively including Conservation Board, construction superintendent for the Canadian Industries Ltd. plant the Groat Bridge the Mid-Canada Line Eldorado Mines expansion the foundations for an addition to the University hospital and the steel design for the Math-Physics complex. He was a professor at the Department of Civil Engineering from 1951 to 1974, teaching graphics and surveying. He was a very talented instructor, admired and appreciated by his students and collogues.


Criteria

To be awarded annually to a student with superior academic achievement in CIV E 250 (Plane Surveying) and CIV E 251 (Survey School) taking a full normal course load at the University of Alberta in the Department of Civil Engineering. Recipient will be selected based on the highest cumulative mark in the combination of Plane Surveying (CIV E 250) and Survey School (CIV E 251). The recipient must otherwise achieve satisfactory overall academic standing.
