Description

Endowed by the Carthy Foundation in honor of Ron Dalby who served as President of Manalta Coal Ltd from 1981 to 1994.
Ronald Dalby was born and raised in Edmonton and graduated from the University of Alberta with a BS.c in Civil Engineering. Many years of experience with Imperial Oil Ltd, made him capable of holding various managerial position after moving to Northwestern Utilities. I.U. International, Canadian Western Natural Gas, and Canadian Utilities Ltd are other companies he held senior positions in. In 1973, he was selected as executive vice president of Canadian utilities. Later, he established his own consulting company in Edmonton. He served on many boards and committees of the APEGGA including the special committee on administration of association affairs, and editorial committee and as a member of the joint APEGGA/Engineering Institute of Canada committee and membership committee of engineering education. From 1967 to 1972, he was elected to council and first vice president from 1972 to 1973 and for a year as president (1973 to 1974). He was awarded the designation of Fellow of engineers Canada in 2009 and an honorary fellow of Geoscientists Canada in 2013. He was the past-president of the Oil Capital Kiwanis Club and director of the Northwest Chamber of Mines in Alberta and St. Stephen's College. He was a member of Alberta’s trade mission to Japan from 1963 to1972.
He served as a chancellor of the University of Alberta for four years. In 1980, he received an honorary doctorate in law from the university.
He passed away at 85, on October 28, 2014, after a long illness in Calgary.


Criteria

To be awarded annually to a student with superior academic achievement entering the fourth year in Civil Engineering who has completed the Project Management Course (CIV E 303). Recipient will be selected on the basis of academic standing and a demonstrated knowledge, initiative and interest in the practical problems and case studies of the labs as determined by the Project Management Course Instructor.
