CW Carry Steel Structures Design Award

The C. W. Carry Chair award was established in 1994 by a generous gift from the Carry Family in honor of Mr. C. W. (Bill) Carry, in the acknowledgment of his outstanding commitment to the improvement of steel structural engineering.
As a pioneer in the steel construction business in western Edmonton, Bill Carry’s construction expertise is responsible for some of Alberta’s landmarks. The downtown Edmonton skyline is reflected in Milner Building and Oxford Tower located in Edmonton Center, designed by Bill Carry. The Carry firm also designed the Manulife Place, an idiosyncratic building with an innovative structural steel framing system located in downtown Edmonton. The defense-related work at Namao, Greisbach, and Cold Lake, Syncrude and the Scotford oil refinery and Redwater petrochemical plants in the Edmonton area and the Daishowa and Alpac forest product plants in northern Alberta and the Great Canadian Oil Sands plants at Fort McMurray are the other testimonies to Bill Carry’s construction skills. Bill Carry was born in Winnipeg. After graduation from St. John’s College, he attended the University of Manitoba, where he attained a BSc degree in Civil Engineering in 1926, followed by an MSc degree in 1929. In 1945, CW Carry Ltd was established by Bill Carry and his wife, Muriel, as a company that started out cleaning used oil drums for Imperial oil. Their firm rapidly established itself as a supplier and fabricator of structural steel after discovering oil in the province accompanied by the healthy post-war economy. In 1958, Canadian Iron Foundrise (now Canron) bought the firm while Bill Carry retained as Regional Vice-President and a company director. CW Carry (1967) Ltd was reformed by Bill Carry and his son in 1967, and four years later, they bought the assets of CW Carry Ltd. from Canron. In order to accommodate the medium structural steel market and identify the benefits of well-organized management and movement of steel inventories, the present Carry plant was designed in 1974. From 1974 that he sold the balance of his interest to Roger till his death in 1992, he retained his position as a president.

Criteria

Awarded to the best design project team in Structural Design III (CIV E 479). Recipients will be selected on the basis of innovative and creative design applied to a practical engineering problem, the use of fundamental engineering principles applied to solving real-world problems, and selection of practical, economical, and feasible materials and manufacturing processes. Selection will be made following team presentations in CIV E 479.
