Endowed by G.C. (George) Walker (Civil '50) and L.R. Newby (Civil '51) and Walker, Newby, and Associates Ltd. in commemoration of their Twenty-Fifth Anniversary of practice in Alberta, and supplemented by matching investment income by the Province of Alberta Advanced Education Endowment Fund of the 1980s.
George was the fifth of seven children born in Grouard, Alberta, on September 15, 1923, and passed away at 88, on February 10, 2012. Finishing his secondary school at High Prairie, he attended the University of Alberta and received his bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering in 1950. He was married to his first wife, Marie Aimee, on February 14, 1949, and second wife, Carole, on November 8, 1972. The result of his first marriage was three sons: Robert, Ian, and James. Carol and George left Vancouver Island in 1990 and have lived in Coble hill, BC, since 1996. During World War II, he fought overseas as a proud Canadian army veteran. In the fall of 1940, the age of 17, he registered to the 14th Field regiment of the Canadian Army in Edmonton and served overseas from 1941 to 1946. He was trained in Petawawa in Ontario, stationed first in London, England, and fought in France, Holland, Belgium, and Germany. He established his own company, G.C. Walker, Alberta Land Survey, in Edmonton in 1953. Walker & Newby Ltd. was formed by joining L.R. Newby, ALS, to .C. Walker firm in 1966. In 1966, Walker, Newby & Associates Ltd. re-incorporated by establishing offices on Calgary and Edmonton. A number of other corporate and name changes happened, ending with Walker Consulting Group Ltd., which was eventually engaged with Stantec Geomatics Ltd. He significantly contributed to the success of those companies over the years. He graduated from the Banff short course in surveying and registered as number 172 Alberta land surveyor in 1952. He was a member of the ALSA Council from 1958 to 1960. In 1961, he became a vice president and one year later, a president of the association. The Associations' outstanding service award and its honorary life member was presented to him in 1983 and 1989, respectively. All of his 14 students who were trained from 1953 to 1978, became successful land surveyors in Alberta. Some of them are still practically active. In 1952, he became a member of the Association of Professional Engineers, Geologists, and Geophysics of Alberta (APEGGA). A special award from APEGGA was presented to him in 1982 because of his significant contribution to urban development, housing, and municipal affairs. He was a member of the housing & Urban Development Association of Canada as well as the Urban Development Institute in Edmonton. He was the former president of the Edmonton Calder Progressive Association with a joyful and social character. His managerial ability in contact with coworkers, staff, and pupils and dedication to his clients was the main reason for his success during years. The Walker community in South Edmonton, east of 66 Street and south of Ellerslie Road, is titled after him.

Criteria

Awarded to students in Civil Engineering who have successfully completed Municipal Systems (ENVE 421) or Facility Design (ENVE 440). Selection based on the highest academic mark ( cumulative mark) and demonstrated interest in design problems related to municipal engineering, urban planning, design, and construction.
