Jack Grainge Memorial Prize in Environmental Engineering
Awards Per Year: 1
Award Value: $900
Description
Endowed by Mrs. Jessie Grainge in the honor of her husband Jack.As a Civil Engineer for the federal government of Canada, Jack Grainge had spent for a while in a shelter with no outhouse and plumbing in lands where no sun rises for two months with temperature below minus fifty to bring the sanitary accessibility for the people of northern Canada. Although it is always though that great engineering works are gigantic projects performed under harsh conditions, construction of primary sewer and water systems in frozen grounds for hundreds of meters also needs a lot of creativity. He had the talent to find simple, practical solutions for engineering problems and to convince the administrators in other departments to understand the value of his advice. Using the benefits of serving in the military during World War II, he could attend the University of Alberta and hold a degree in Civil Engineering. After graduation, he took more courses at this university and later gained a master’s degree from the University of California at Berkeley. Winning two travel fellowships from the World Health Organization (WHO), made it possible for him to travel and study municipal engineering and community planning in Greenland, Iceland, and northern Scandinavian. Associate membership was awarded him by the California Chapter of the Society of Sigma XI. Also, an honorary membership award and a gold medal were presented to him by professional Instituted of the Public Service of Canada and the Northwest Territories Association of Professional Engineers, Geoscientists, and Geophysicist, respectively.
