Laboratory Training + Access Requirements
Training
The Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering adheres to training mandates from U of A Health, Safety and Environment Office. To understand what training is required for all university employees or supervisors regardless of work space, please visit HRHSE’s Mandatory Safety Training Webpage. On this site you can also do a training needs assessment, the various other certifications you might need for working in a laboratory, and find more information about requirements for those working in the field.
Requirements for additional training will vary based on the type of hazards present in that space. For high service labs in CEE+MP, the minimum training researchers will end up needing are listed on page 1 of our Lab Orientation and Training Record, a signed copy of which must be provided to reception before access will be given.
Access
To gain access to high service labs in CEE+MP, you are required to provide completed the Laboratory Safety Orientation and Training Record form. If a physical key is required (vs swipe or proximity reader access) you will also need to complete a Authorization of Key Form. Copies of both can be submitted to civeinfo@ualberta.ca or in person at DICE 7 th floor reception when you come for a key.
Office spaces and computational labs only require a completed
Authorization of Key Form.
The laboratory safety orientation and training record form should be signed by a PI or designated lab safety coordinator. No laboratory keys will be issued to a student until the safety requirements are met and documented in this sheet. This sheet is to be kept as a training log by the laboratory safety coordinator, in the laboratory space, as long as the student will be using the laboratory.
